Why have an orphanage?
Nearly half of Afghanistan’s population lives below the poverty line, many being orphaned children who have no income at all. There are 2 million orphans in Afghanistan who don’t know their date of birth, have no birth certificate and have lost track of their extended family. This forces them into child labour and providing for themselves. How unfortunate is it that a child grows up without having a childhood. For this reason AMWO is working on an orphanage in Jalalabad city that will give these underprivileged children the opportunity towards a brighter future. Al – Mouwasat Orphanage is located near Kotwaal Plaza, Angoor Bagh, Phase 4, Jalalabad, Afghanistan
The orphanage will have a capacity of 25 orphans with no more than 5 orphans under the supervision of each caretaker.
The aim of this project is to give these orphans a home and not just a place where they eat, live and learn which is the unfortunate reality of some orphanages. We want these kids to make memories, be happy and give them the childhood they deserve.
There will be a dedicated play area outdoors and plenty of recreational and educational extra curricular activities the kids will be engaged in to develop their social and other essential skills.
What child safeguarding procedures will be in place?
We have decided to use the following two ways to ensure the safeguarding of the orphans at the orphanage:
i. There are only 5 orphans per caretaker, this is to ensure that there isn’t a great deal of stress on the caretakers which could compromise the welfare of the orphans. The caretakers report to the orphanage manager who reports to the country director, there is an organised chain of command to ensure that any decisions made are in the best favour of the kids at the orphanage.
ii. The external teachers will be trained so that they can see and observe any red flags when it comes to the welfare of the kids at the orphanage.
What is the projected monthly running cost of the orphanage.
The projected monthly cost of the orphanage will be $3,445.00 per month.
What is the overall objective / outcome for an orphan when they leave?
Upon leaving the orphanage, the orphan will have graduated high school, become a hafiz and they will also have attained a skill set that will allow them to continue life and pursue their future goals, they will be able to continue their education in a madrasa or a university.
